Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Prison Service has announced that President Adama Barrow has exercised his Prerogative of Mercy under Section 82 of the 1997 Constitution, granting presidential pardon to 56 male inmates.
According to a statement from the prison authorities, the inmates were released on Wednesday from the Mile Two State Central Prison as part of the exercise of the president’s constitutional mandate.
The Prison Service said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration, offering eligible inmates an opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.
Speaking during the release ceremony, Ansumana Manneh, the Director General of the Gambia Prison Service (GPS) expressed appreciation to the president for what he described as a compassionate gesture. He encouraged the released individuals to become responsible members of their communities and to demonstrate positive transformation following their incarceration.
The Director General also urged the pardoned inmates to abide by the law and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Gambia Prison Service reaffirmed its commitment to offender rehabilitation, reform, and successful reintegration into society.
