Business Owners Complain over Power Outages and Rising Fuel Prices

Africa-Press – Gambia. Several business owners have expressed concern over frequent power outages and rising fuel prices, calling on the National Water and Electricity Company to take urgent measures to stabilize electricity supply.

Some businessmen linked the recent power disruptions to global fuel market pressures reportedly associated with international geopolitical tensions.

Vendors and small business owners said the outages were affecting their livelihoods, particularly those dealing in perishable goods.

“We sell seafood. We need electricity so that the seafood will not spoil. Since last week we have been experiencing power outages. We are really suffering,” said Fatou Ceesay, a concerned business lady.

She added that prolonged outages were worsening living conditions and affecting small-scale businesses.

Another concerned individual, Lamin Saidy, said scheduled and unscheduled power cuts were damaging property and disrupting daily activities, especially during the hot season.

“We are among the affected areas. The frequent on and off is destroying our properties. At night it becomes worse because of the heat,” he remarked.

Saidy called for improved energy planning and contingency measures to address supply challenges, noting that fuel price increases were further straining transport and household costs.

He also urged authorities to invest more in energy management, saying reliance on a single national utility system increased vulnerability during crises.

Abdoulie Fatty, for his part called for government intervention, saying electricity was essential for most economic activities.

He questioned the availability of national fuel reserves and urged authorities to prioritize essential services during emergencies.

Interviewees said they hope for urgent action to improve on power supply and ease the rising cost of fuel in the country.
