Africa-Press – Ghana. The newly elected Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Stephen Ampem Darko Koranteng, has underscored the fundamental democratic role of journalism, describing it as more than a profession; “a pillar of democracy.”

Speaking during a swearing-in ceremony held in Koforidua, Mr. Koranteng pledged to build strategic partnerships and work collaboratively with civil society organisations, traditional authorities and relevant agencies to empower journalists, ensure their safety and welfare.

“I will prioritise mentorship and capacity-building for young reporters, promote ethical journalism, and ensure that the voice of the Eastern Region is heard, respected, and impactful in national conversations,” he said.

He added: “To my fellow journalists, I will need your support and endeavour in helping to build a formidable and vibrant GJA in the region; to be accorded with the dignity and respect we deserve as journalists.”

He echoed the role of journalism as a cornerstone of a democratic society, stating that: “Journalism is not just a profession; it is a pillar of democracy. Let us rise to this featured responsibility with pride and purpose.”

The ceremony marked the formal swearing-in of the newly elected Eastern Regional executives, administered by Justice George Krofa Addae, Supervising High Court Judge of the Koforidua High Court.

The officials took the oath of office and the oath of allegiance, marking the legal confirmation of their leadership.

Justice Addae urged the executives to serve with integrity and humility, and to act as effective coordinators between journalists in the region and the GJA’s national leadership.

“Your swearing-in signifies that your election has now become official and legal. You must commit to serving journalists and fostering coordination with the National Executives,” he stated.
