Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Rockson-Nelson Etse Defeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, has announced that Parliament will invite the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to explain the circumstances under which Mr Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, was detained for several hours on Wednesday, December 3, before being released.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, Mr Defeamekpor criticised the Special Prosecutor, for what he described as an “abuse of power”.

He cautioned that if the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) continued to “weaponise its powers,” Parliament, which created the Office, would not hesitate to abrogate it.

“The entire country frowned on his conduct,” Mr Defeamekpor stated, stressing that such actions undermined public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

In a sharp contrast, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase Ayirebi, argued that the Majority Chief Whip’s concerns were influenced by the fact that Lawyer Kpebu is “perceived as a friend of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)”.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah observed that the issue of wrongful detention was beyond the Special Prosecutor, noting that it had become a broader culture among law enforcement agencies to detain citizens who voluntarily respond to invitations for interrogation.

He emphasized that while the Minority would not object to the Special Prosecutor’s invitation to Parliament, the matter should be examined through a non-partisan lens.

“The practice should be looked at in non-partisan lenses,” he said, adding that the ruling government remained silent when investigative bodies detained officials of previous administrations, thereby setting what he described “a bad precedent.”

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is responsible for investigating and prosecuting cases of corruption and corruption-related offences.

The Office has been in the news for high-profile investigations and controversies.

The debate in Parliament reflects growing concerns about the balance between law enforcement powers and citizens’ rights, with MPs calling for accountability and fairness in the exercise of prosecutorial authority.
