Africa-Press – Ghana. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed the death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong after the club’s team bus was attacked by armed robbers.

The incident happened after Berekum Chelsea were returning from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex 1996 in a week 29 encounter.

According to a statement released by Berekum Chelsea, the team was travelling back to Berekum from Samreboi when its bus was blocked on the road by suspected armed robbers.

The club said masked men, some wielding guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the vehicle as the driver attempted to reverse.

“Unfortunately one of our players is badly injured and is receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital, waiting to be transferred to the regional hospital.

“We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response, sports journalists who quickly disseminated the information, the town of Ashiresu which provided temporary shelter for our players and officials of Bibiani Gold Stars who have offered tremendous support,” the statement said.

The GFA later confirmed that Frimpong had died as a result of the attack.

The local football governing body also extended condolences to Frimpong’s family; his teammates, technical staff and management; and urged the football community to unite in support of those affected.

“We are in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident,” the GFA said, adding that it expected justice to be served.
