Africa-Press – Ghana. The 54th Annual Volta Regional Basic School Inter-District Sports Festival is underway in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.
The festival being hosted in the Municipality for the first time will see participants across all the 18 Municipal and Districts participating in various field and track events.
Mr Victor Kwaku Kovey, Hohoe Municipal Director of Education, said the Competition would have winners hence no competitor should feel as failures if they do not win a medal.
He said such failures should drive them to strive to excel.
Mr Francis Yao Agbemadi, Volta Regional Director of Education, said the Competition was a celebration of youth, talent, regional unity and timeless value of discipline, perseverance and fair play.
He said sports and games had been an integral part of the educational calendar but was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Agbemadi said the gathering marked the return and renewal of the commitment to sports as a vital tool for education and empowerment.
He said the Competition provided a platform to build confidence, lifelong friendship and leadership and not only the winning trophies.
Mr Agbemadi admonished the participants to compete fairly, avoid drug use, build friendship and behave responsibly.
He called for close supervision particularly at accommodating sites of participating learners.
Mr Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the Assembly would offer its support to ensure the success of the event.
He admonished the learners to liaise with their teachers for the needed assistance.
Domingo Magdalene, a participant, took the athlete oath on behalf of all participants promising to take part in the competition abiding by its rules.
Madam Annette Ama Aboagye, Agortime Ziope District P. E. Coordinator, took the officials oath on behalf of the officials with the promise to adjudicate the games and sports in the true spirit of sportsmanship as well as rules governing the games.
