Africa-Press – Ghana. A coalition of artists, activists, and organizations from Africa and around the world has called on South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to use his country’s G20 presidency to champion a global wealth tax on the super-rich.
The The G20 is the world’s biggest economic meeting.
Twenty major economies come together periodically to discuss global issues like trade, finance, and climate change with the view to finding solutions to them.
Members include countries like the United States, China, Germany, India, Japan, and many more.
According to Mr Bob Amiteye, Spokesman for AbibiNsroma, the Ghana based anti poverty and environmental Non Governmental Organization, the group argues that the tax could help address extreme inequality, poverty, and climate change.
In an open letter, the coalition notes that Africa is home to 23 billionaires whose combined wealth has increased by 56% in just five years, while nearly 850 million Africans face hunger.
They propose a 1% wealth tax and 10% income tax on Africa’s richest 1%, which could raise $66 billion annually, enough to provide free education and universal electricity across the continent.
The letter urges President Ramaphosa to publicly champion the idea of taxing the super-rich for people and planet, saying that “the era of wealth hoarding and public suffering must end.”
Mr Amiteye says, “The coalition stands ready to support the President in this effort, which we believe could be a transformative moment for Africa and the world.”
The truth is clear: the wealth exists, but it remains concentrated instead of shared.
Around the world, the tide is turning. Economists, global leaders, and even millionaires are calling for taxing extreme wealth to fund public services and climate action.
In Ghana, the AbibiNsroma sent letters to that effect to the South Africa High Commission, Embassies of the Republic of Korea, Japan, Netherlands.
It also held engagements many stakeholders, including Market women, Students & Facilitators, Fisher folks, Moslim groups and Community Members.
