Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, has urged Members of the Northern Caucus to embrace unity as a catalyst for sustainable development across northern Ghana.
Speaking at the Northern Ghana Development Conference in Tamale, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for MPs to rise above ethnic divisions and foster collaborative partnerships focused on enterprise-driven growth to meet the region’s socio-economic needs.
The conference, themed “A Conference of Northern People, Leaders and Partners,” was spearheaded by the 9th Parliament of Ghana and brought together stakeholders from across the five northern regions to explore solutions to the area’s development challenges.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin underscored economic cooperation and entrepreneurship as critical pillars of transformation, calling on stakeholders to transform long-standing rivalries into strategic investment alliances.
He said, “Our strength lies in our ability to work together—not as isolated tribes or regions—but as a united northern front with a shared vision of economic empowerment and social progress.”
Nanton-Naa Mahamadu Bawa V, Paramount Chief of the Nanton Traditional Area, who chaired the event, described the initiative as a bold step toward transcending partisan politics, which he said often hinders lasting development.
He called for stronger collaboration between the Northern Caucus and traditional authorities to address pressing issues such as illegal mining and water pollution, which threaten livelihoods and environmental sustainability.
Mr. Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, acknowledged the persistent development gap between the north and other regions, emphasizing the urgency of a unified approach to bridge the divide.
