Africa-Press – Ghana. The Management of the Amasaman Senior High Technical School (AMASTEC) says it will next year introduce Information Communication Technology (ICT) as an elective subject for Visual Arts and Technical students.

The decision, which is intended to equip the students with practical skills in ICT, follows the provision of a modern ICT Classroom to the school by the Israeli Embassy in Ghana.

AMASTEC is among three schools in the country that have been provided with modern ICT classrooms under the Embassy’s Education for Digital Innovation Project. The other schools are the Tema Manhean Senior High Technical School, and the Walewale Senior High Technical School.

Each school has been provided with 20 laptops for students, one laptop for the domain and instructor usage, one smart television for the students to follow the teacher’s instructions, one printer and two WIFI routers for internet access.

Ms Shlomit Sufa, the Isareli Ambasador to Ghana, officially handed over the facility to the management of the School at a ceremony at Amasaman on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

Ms Sufa said the project was initiated out of the Embassy’s desire to align with the Government of Ghana’s drive to project digitalisation and innovation not only in the economy but also in the education sector. She said the installation of the ICT equipment in the three schools cost the Embassy about $46,000.

“Through this, we seek to provide and install adequate information technology equipment such as laptops, printers, smart television screens and Wifi routers in ICT classrooms of Senior High Schools in Ghana,” she said.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, a Deputy Minister of Education commended the Israeli Embassy for augmenting the efforts of the Government in promoting practical ICT learning in schools.

He said the acquisition of ICT skills was essential to developing the technical capabilities of students to become relevant in today’s technology-driven economy.

“I encourage you to see ICT as a skill and not as a course that you’ll be examined,” he told the students.

Ms Irene Ocansey, Headmistress, Amasaman Senior High Technical School, said due to the lack of adequate computers, Technical and Visual Arts students had been compelled to offer either French, Economics or Literature as their fourth elective subject.

“The Technical and Visual Arts Department have been really looking forward to this. Now that we have it, next year we can introduce ICT as an elective for Visual Arts, especially and the Technical Department,” she said.
