Anlo Traditional Council Urges Government to Prioritize Development

Africa-Press – Ghana. Togbi Sri III, The Awoamefia of Anlo State has called on the government to prioritise key development projects in the Volta Region, particularly in the Anlo Traditional Area, to promote inclusive national growth and accelerate socio-economic transformation.

The revered traditional leader made the appeal on Sunday afternoon when Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, paid a courtesy call on him at his Royal residence at Woe.

The visit formed part of the Minister’s regional tour aimed at strengthening collaboration between political leadership and the chieftaincy institution.

In his remarks, Togbi Sri III praised President John Dramani Mahama for his good leadership so far and stressed the need for strategic state investment in education, infrastructure, and port development, describing them as crucial pillars for unlocking the full potential of the Volta Region.

He appealed to the government to consider the establishment of a School of Pharmacy in Anloga, a move he said would significantly enhance tertiary education opportunities for the youth.

“Such an institution will not only build capacity in the health sector but also curb rural-urban migration by offering local access to quality professional and tertiary training.”

Togbi Sri III also reiterated the urgent need for progress on the Keta Port project, calling it a transformative national venture with the potential to boost economic growth.

“The Keta Port is one of the major projects that will change the fortunes of the Volta Region and Ghana as a whole. The project is long overdue, and I call on Mr. Mahama to prioritise it for us,” the Awoamefia stated passionately.

He added that the port’s completion would open the region to international trade, attract significant local and foreign investment, and serve as a vital economic corridor along Ghana’s eastern coastline.

Touching on transportation and commerce, the Awoamefia called for urgent improvements in road infrastructure across the region.

He identified key routes in need of rehabilitation, including the Ho–Tokor, Denu–Keta, Havedzi–Metrikasa, and Kome–Shime roads and other major roads in the Region.

He explained that improved road networks would facilitate easier movement within districts, boost inter-community trade, and improve access to health and education services.

Accompanying the Awoamefia during the meeting were several Paramount Chiefs, Queen Mothers, and elders of Anlo State, including Zikpitor Dan Abodakpi, Mama Wotobe II, President of Anlo Queens Council and Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, the Awadada of Anlo. These traditional leaders expressed strong support for the Awoamefia’s developmental appeal.

In an exclusive interaction Togbi Agbesi Awusu II praised the Regional Minister for his dedication to duty, particularly his prompt response to recent tidal wave disasters in Agavedzi and Salakope.

He also appealed to the Minister to advocate the extension of the ongoing sea defence project to other vulnerable coastal communities in the Volta Region.

“We are calling for the sea defence wall to be extended to protect all coastal communities. The current interventions are not enough to save lives and property,” he stressed.

Responding to the concerns, Regional Minister James Gunu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive development and acknowledged the strategic importance of the Volta Region in the national agenda.

The ceremony was marked by colourful Anlo drumming and dancing performed by cultural troupes, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the occasion.

The Minister was accompanied by several dignitaries, including: Mr. Wisdom Seade, Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Madam Sandra Kpedor, and District Chief Executive for Anloga, Mr. Dagbah Daniel, MCE for Akatsi South, Mr. Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko-Atokple, Volta Regional Council of State Member.

Also in attendance were notable members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including: Mr. Wonder Victor Kutor, Member of the NDC National Executive Committee (NEC), Mr. Mawutor Agbavitor Volta Regional NDC Chairman, Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, Volta Regional Representative on the National Development Planning Commission, Mr. Augustus Awity, among others
