Africa-Press – Ghana. The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has explained that the magnitude of crimes committed by individuals or former government appointees determines the bail conditions imposed on them.
Dr Ayine was responding to an urgent question from Mr Habib Iddrisu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tolon, asking on behalf of the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, raising concerns over what he described as “excessive bail conditions” placed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on some former government officials.
The Minister stressed that the bail requirements fell squarely within the laws of Ghana.
Dr Ayine noted that suspects who considered the bail conditions too stringent had the right to approach the courts to seek a downward review.
According to him, the bail conditions were necessary to ensure that accused persons do not abscond and remain within the jurisdiction to stand trial.
Several former government appointees are currently facing prosecution for alleged financial infractions, with EOCO spearheading investigations and enforcement of bail requirements.
