Bible Society of Ghana Launches 60 Years Anniversary, Enhances Bible Literacy

Africa-Press – Ghana. The Bible Society of Ghana has launched its 60th-anniversary celebration with a renewed commitment to enhancing Bible literacy across the nation.

Speaking at the anniversary launch, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, President of the Society, acknowledged the pivotal role the BSG has played over the past six decades in translating, publishing, and distributing the Holy Bible.

He emphasised that this dedication had empowered countless Ghanaians to encounter the Word of God, serving as a beacon of hope and a source of strength.

Archbishop Agyinasare highlighted the numerous stories of transformation that have emerged from the Bible Society of Ghana and announced ambitious plans to further its mission.

He noted that the efforts had not only enriched the spiritual lives of individuals but have also cultivated a culture of love, unity, and understanding within the Ghanaian society.

Archbishop Agyinasare affirmed the enduring mission of the BSG and the inherent power of God’s Word to achieve its intended purpose.

He urged the Society and the Ghanaian Christian community to embrace innovation in spreading the gospel to meet contemporary social, economic, and spiritual challenges.

He encouraged the exploration of new technologies and methodologies to reach a wider audience, particularly the youth, who represented the future of faith in Ghana.

Archbishop Agyinasare also stressed the importance of engaging in dialogues that foster understanding and reconciliation, embodying the spirit of Christ.

However, the Archbishop cautioned against a complete shift towards digital resources, citing Sweden’s recent decision to reinvest in printed textbooks due to concerns about the impact of digital learning on student focus and skills.

He underscored the continued importance of hard copies of the Bible in Ghana, referencing insights from the Bible Society of India about the enduring preference for physical texts and the need to preserve them for future generations.

Archbishop Agyinasare called for a balanced approach that integrated innovative methods with the continued provision of hard copy Bibles, ensuring accessibility for all.

He called for a collective effort to ignite a new era of faith and outreach, reaffirming the central role of God’s Word in the lives of individuals and communities as the BSG embarked on its next 60 years and beyond.

The anniversary will be marked by a series of projects and initiatives, including the distribution of 500,000 Bibles to all Junior High School (JHS) 1 students across the country, aiming to instil the Word of God in the younger generation.

The year-long celebration will also feature a series of engaging activities, including fundraising dinners and lunches, Bible quizzes, public lectures, regional anniversary launches, and a health

walk.

The Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) emerged from a growing desire in the late 1950s and early 1960s to have an autonomous national body dedicated to Scripture distribution.

Instrumental figures like Rev. Prof. Baeta, Mr. A. L. Quansah, and Mr. E. S. Aidoo spearheaded discussions, culminating in the establishment of the Society in 1965.
