Africa-Press – Ghana. Akontombra (WNR), Nov. 19- Nana Kwabena Bioh II, Chief of Sefwi Akontombra, has hailed ATC Ghana Limited for promoting computer literacy and information communication technology (ICT) education in his traditional area.
He expressed gratitude to the Company for the establishment of ATC Ghana Digital ICT Learning Centre in Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region, which according to him, would contribute immensely towards empowering the children and the youth in the Community with ICT skills.
Nana Kwabena Bioh gave this commendation during the commissioning of the ATC Ghana Digital ICT Learning Centre at the Anglican Primary School in Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region.
The Sefwi Akontombra Digital Community Facility, which is the first of its kind to be set up by ATC Ghana in the Western North Region, would serve students and the Community.
American Tower Corporation, ATC Ghana’s parent company, is a leading owner and operator of communications sites for the wireless and broadcast industries. ATC Ghana is the leading tower company in Ghana, and also the largest with over 3,900 communications sites across the country.
Nana Kwabena Bioh assured ATC Ghana that he was eveready to provide the Company with a parcel of land for the establishment of a tertiary educational institution.
Mr Yahaya Yunusa, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ATC Ghana, in a speech read on his behalf said Digital Communities were learning centres that use the uninterrupted electrical power and internet connectivity from ATC’s tower sites to provide free ICT learning in the communities the Company serves.
He said in conjunction with key partners such as Africa ICT Right and Ghana Code Club, ATC Ghana seeks to provide ICT skills and entrepreneurial training to the youth to equip them with the right skill-sets to broaden their career prospects in an increasingly connected and interconnected world, either by increasing their employability or though entrepreneurship.
He said the Digital Communities project was also in line with the Government of Ghana’s vision to digitalise all aspects of the Ghanaian economy under its Digital Ghana Agenda.
“We, at ATC Ghana, are proud to play a role in supporting Government’s vision of an inclusive digital economy while encouraging the aspirations of the many brilliant young people across the length and breadth of this country.”
He said in this regard, ATC Ghana was rolling out Digital Communities at four locations in 2021, which are Asuom in the Eastern Region, Berekum in the Bono Region, Bawku in the Upper East Region and Sefwi Akontombra in the Western North Region. That of Asuom and Berekum have already been commissioned.
He said the four new Digital Communities would add up to the six facilities already operating at Jamasi in the Ashanti Region, Savelugu in the Northern Region, Tarkwa in the Western Region, Bawdua in the Eastern Region, Makola in the Greater Accra Region and Battor in the Volta Region.
“At ATC Ghana, we believe that supporting education by leveraging on technology as part of our sustainability goals is the right thing to do and we take great pride in how our organization demonstrates its commitment to the communities where we operate,” he said.
Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO, Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, said the Chamber and the ATC Ghana believed that development was about people, saying “it is about ensuring that our people have access to technology to be able to ensure that the gap that exist between us and the developed countries we are able to bridge it”.
He urged the teachers of the School to use the Facility to promote the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) in order to use technology to drive the solutions of problems that confront their society.
Mr Amoah Yawson, District Chief Executive, Sefwi Akontombra, thanked ATC Ghana for the provision of the Digital ICT Learning Centre, adding that the Facility would go a long way to enhance ICT education in the District. He appealed to teachers of the School to ensure proper maintenance of the equipment for the benefit of the Community.
Madam Letitia Asiedu-Attafuah, Head of Human Resources for ATC Tower Ghana, said as a technology focused Company, ATC Ghana was very invested in ensuring equal access to quality ICT education to everyone and young people in particular.
