Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for his high and personal interest shown in the affairs of the media.

Mr Dwumfuor gave the commendation when he led a Delegation of the GJA National Executives to pay a courtesy call on President Mahama at the Presidency in Accra.

The Delegation was at the Presidency to present a litany of issues affecting the Media fraternity in Ghana for redress.

Other Members of the GJA Delegation, who accompanied Mr Dwumfuor include Madam Rebecca Ekpe, GJA Vice President; Mr Dominic Hlordzi, GJA General Secretary; Mr Suleiman Mustapha, GJA Organizing Secretary; Madam Bertha Badu-Agyei, GJA National Treasurer and Mr Zadok Kwame Gyesi, GJA Public Affairs Officer.

The rest are Mrs Gifty Affenyi-Dadzie, a former GJA President and a former member of the Council of State; Mr Kwesi Pratt Junior, a veteran journalist; Mr Kobby Asmah, a former Editor of the Graphic Communications Group Limited and a Member of National Media Commission (NMC) and Mr Gabriel Bosompem, a former Member of NMC.

Mr Dwumfuor said: “GJA commends President on directive to the Minister of Defence and Interior to investigate assault on Joy News crew by soldiers during the demolition of MacDan’s Warehouse,” he said.

“In fact, this is the first time in recent memory that a President of Ghana has directly intervened in a case of assault against journalists.

“However, we are not surprised at all because you are one of us and a proud member for that matter.

“It’s the reason, we publicly and openly challenged an unfortunate statement made by a very known/popular Politician that, a Journalist cannot be a President.”

Mr Dwumfuor reiterated the GJA’s commitment to collaborating with the Government to address attacks against Journalists and other media practitioners through proactive solutions, which would involve the Security institutions especially the Ghana Police Service

He also called on the Government to support the medical treatment of Mr Pius Asiedu as promised by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister in-charge of Government Communications at the swearing-in of the newly-elected National Executive members of the GJA in July 2025.

He said Mr Asiedu was shot in the left leg while covering election collation at Ablekuma Central in 2020, and other victims of Elections brutalities.

He further appealed for compensation for other assault victims – Latif Iddrisu, Erastus Asare Donkor, Ohemeng Tawiah and Theophilus Kwesi Annim Agyei.

President Mahama informed the Delegation that he had received the Investigative report on the 2020 and 2024 election violence and forwarded it to the Attorney-General’s (AG) Department for action on findings.

He said they had given the Attorney-General the terms of reference to look at what adequate compensation would be for people who had been the victims of violence, including those who died.

He announced that the Government was taking steps to re-launch the Media Development Fund, as part of efforts to support the activities of the media.
