Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister-Designate, has expressed strong opposition to LGBTQ+ practices, emphasising their inconsistency with his personal values, ethics, and Muslim faith.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, Mr Iddrisu said, “… Mr Chairman, it’s a cultural wrong… It is repugnant to my Muslim values and ethics.”
Mr Iddrisu’s stance aligned with President John Dramani Mahama’s recent proposal to introduce the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill as a government-sponsored initiative.
This approach, suggested during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra on Tuesday, aimed to grant the Bill greater legitimacy and improve its chances of passing through Parliament.
Mr Iddrisu, also the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Tamale South emphasisd the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s cultural and moral value system, highlighting the need for respect from all individuals.
“… Mr Chairman, we are a country, and we define our values both social and cultural, and we should expect all other persons to respect those values…
“We are a country, we have our own values, and we have a duty to preserve those values within the ambit of the constitution,” he added.
