Africa-Press – Ghana. Dr Freda Prempeh, a former Member of Parliament and Founder of the Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF) Wednesday commended the Black Queens for advancing in the group stages of the CAF TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nation (WAFCON) 2024.
The UWF is a Non-Governmental Organization that focuses on empowering indigenous women and girls, encouraging them to recognize their self-worth and contribute to their communities and society.
It also advocates the promotion of creative and artistic talents among women and girls, positioning them to contribute to the growth and development of the larger society.
Dr Prempeh rallied a strong national support base for the Queens, saying “the Black Queens has now proven skeptic wrong, though the journey hasn’t been challenging for team since 2016 that they qualified to the quarter finals of the WAFCON” The Swedish Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegen led Ghana’s senior women’s team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the WAFCON after securing 4-1victory against Tanzania.
Following an intense and gripping group stage, the Queens joined Morocco, Zambia,
Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa, and Mali in the knockout phase of the tournament starting Friday, July 18, 2025, with a coveted place in the semi-finals at stake.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) sport at Duayaw-Nkwanta, Dr Prempeh said she was highly optimistic that the “with the team’s current momentum, the Queens will outshine their Algerian counterpart in their quarter final encounter on Saturday”.
The former outspoken legislator for the Tano North constituency in the Ahafo Region said: “what the Queens need now is a strong support base and our motivation”, saying “their qualification is an important milestone for the team”.
Dr Prempeh said: “From their commitment and field of play so far, the Queens aim to build on their successes and thereby win the WAFCON title for the nation accordingly”.
