Francis Obeng (Presbyterian Senior High School, Osu) and Ivy Narteh (Osudoku Secondary Technical High School) clinched victory in the 2024 Greater Accra Region Schools Badminton Super Zonal Championships. Held on July 10th, 2024, at the Ada Technical Institute, the event saw the highest participation in five years with 10 schools, 15 teams, and 60 student athletes.
Champions Crowned
Obeng dominated the boys’ singles category, defeating Desmond Billy (Achimota Senior High School) to claim the top spot. Edmond Mintah (West Africa Senior High School) and Julius Osabutey (Osudoku Secondary Technical High School) secured the third and fourth positions, respectively.
Narteh emerged victorious in the girls’ singles, besting Benedicta Teye (Tema Senior High School). Miriam Kemeh (West Africa Senior High School) and Peggy Agyemfra (Achimota Senior High School) completed the podium by achieving third and fourth place finishes.
Record-Breaking Participation and Pathway to Regionals
This year’s Super Zonal competition witnessed a significant increase in participation, highlighting the growing popularity of badminton in the region. All participating schools – Osu PRESEC, Osudoku, WASS, Achimota, Accra Academy, Labone SHS, Prampram Senior High, Accra Girls, Kpone Senior High, and Temasco – were champions within their respective zones. These winners will progress to represent the Greater Accra Region at the upcoming National Schools Festival scheduled for September in the Western Region.
Encouragement for Continued Growth
Ghana Badminton Association President, Mr. Yeboah Evans, graced the event and addressed the positive trajectory of the sport. He encouraged students to leverage the educational and athletic benefits offered by badminton and actively participate in future championship events. He emphasized the value of teamwork and the overall enjoyment badminton can provide.
