Africa-Press – Ghana. Government will continue to allow churches to worship freely as part of democracy and national development, Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng has said.
Speaking during Eloyi Christian Church’s Easter holidays ceremony in Tsetsebjwe, Minister Morwaeng said government would not violate the people’s right to worship freely and also called on churches to pray for peace.
The minister also spoke against the people who sought to divide the nation along tribal lines.
As such, he called on Eloyi Christian Church members to pray for peace and unity that will see Botswana develop and move in the right direction.
Minister Morwaeng thanked churches for praying against COVID-19 at a time when people were in panic mode while others were worried about their lives and those of their loved ones.
In other issues, the minister said for the church to start moulding better citizenry, it should start with members loving each other and curbing divisions within the church.
Such divisions, he said, had the ability to portray the church as an institution unworthy of recognition.
“You’re the light of this nation and people should learn to love from you,” said Minister Morwaeng who encouraged churches to preach peace and love.
Also, the minister called on churches to pray against social ills such as lawlessness, gender-based violence, defilement and rape, killings amongst other ills.
He said in praying against such ills the church would help dig people out of darkness into holiness.
For his part, Kgosi Kgosidialwa Motsamai of Tsetsebjwe called on the church to pray for peace during 2024 elections.
“Our being as Batswana is such that we express our difference through verbal discourse. We’re never the ones to take arms and shed blood,” said Kgosi Motsamai.
The village leader challenged government to allocate plots to churches as they help foster peace and engage in some charitable exercises towards helping the needy.
He said allocating plots to the churches would rid them from conducting their affairs from homes.
Eloyi’s Archbishop Sekai Jakoba said he was committed to praying for discovery of cure for HIV/AIDS and cancer.
Arch Bishop Jakoba said the two ailments were killing many people, therefore, he took a spiritual sojourn to Israel to nurture and nourish himself for the battle ahead.
The Eloyi leader also talked against GBV saying the scourge seemed to unending.
“I’m against GBV and I’m praying that God tame our hearts…we can’t have a society where a father can’t be left with their kids fearing for defilement and rape,” said the archbishop.
