India, Nigeria Submit Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

Africa-Press – Ghana. Commonwealth Sports, the governing body of the Commonwealth Games, has announced that Nigeria and India have officially submitted proposals to host the 2030 edition of the Games.

The process, which closed on August 31, 2025, followed an unprecedented wave of diverse and far-reaching expressions of interest in hosting the competition.

India, having last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, has re-entered the bidding process while Nigeria is also aiming to become the first West African country to host the event.

Dr Donald Rukare, President, Commonwealth Sports in a statement said the proposals from the two sporting powerhouse nations was a confirmation of the continued significance and legacy potential of the Games.

He welcomed the decision as positive, seeing two of the world’s vibrant nations seeking to take such a bold step towards sports development.

He sent heartfelt appreciation to the Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA) of India and Nigeria for the dynamic and ambitious spirit in which they have engaged in the collaborative dialogue phase.

“The Commonwealth Sport team has been inspired by the National Sports Policies presented and excited about how the Games can advance national ambitions and create legacy benefits for local communities”, he said.

Dr. Rukare again stated that the Committee had been impressed by the national policies submitted and is hopeful the competition would advance national ambitions and create legacy benefits for local communities.

The President said the 2030 Evaluation Commission now face an important and difficult task of reviewing and evaluating the proposals and recommending a host to the Executive Board.

Madam Katie Sadleir, Commonwealth Sport CEO said “We have made significant progress over the last 12 months, securing Glasgow as host for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and announcing Malta as host of the next Commonwealth Youth Games in 2027.

I would like to thank all of the member countries who participated in the Expression of Interest process, and of course, to credit Glasgow and Scotland for setting a truly collaborative, flexible and pioneering example with their 2026 model, which is inspiring new, diverse countries to consider hosting the Games in the decades ahead.”

She noted the announcement is a message to athlete community that the Commonwealth Games remains a major milestone in the global sporting calendar and will continue to be an event that attracts the very best athletes.

The Evaluation Commission is chaired by CS Vice President Sandra Osborne KC, who also serves as the Federation’s Sports Committee Chair and President of the Barbados Commonwealth Games Association and Olympic Committee.
