Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams,Minister of Sports and Recreation has paid a working visit to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2025 Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions.
Once Ghana’s premier sporting hub, the stadium has undergone multiple renovations, requiring significant infrastructural upgrades to meet CAF’s licensing standards and restore its full operational capacity.
He was received by Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and officials of the National Sports Authority led by the Acting Regional Director.
The inspection was crucial as Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars, prepare to represent Ghana in the CAF Confederations Cup and the CAF Champions League respectively.
The Sports Minister highlighted the region’s deep-rooted role in Ghana’s football heritage and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to its revered status.
He also revealed that his office is in discussions with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Energy, to review utility billing structures for sports facilities and identify strategies to lower operational expenses.
“Plans are also underway to pursue green sports investment opportunities, including natural grass pitches supported by borehole systems and solar-powered lighting,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency assured the Ashanti Regional Minister of strong collaboration in executing the required interventions to make the stadium fully ready for the upcoming CAF competitions.
He emphasized that revamping the facility would not only enhance regional pride but also help rekindle national interest and confidence in Ghana’s domestic football.
The NSA team briefed the Minister on the numerous challenges confronting the stadium, such as the deteriorating pitch caused by a faulty irrigation system, non-functional floodlights, a broken public address system, damaged dressing room facilities, outdated seating, and substantial outstanding utility bills.
