Africa-Press – Ghana. The Korle Klottey National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has held a quiz competition for four selected basic schools in the municipality to promote civic education and constitutional awareness among the pupils.

The schools are Virgo Preparatory School, All Saint Anglican Model Basic School, Osu Presby Girls’ School, and Gray Memorial Basic School.

In the competition All Saint Anglican Model Basic School came first with 42 points, followed by Virgo Preparatory School with 32 points, while Gray Memorial Basic School took the third position with 31 points, and Osu Presby Girls’ School fourth with 30 points.

The schools and the participants were awarded with certificates, prizes, citations and the ultimate prize of a cup went to the All-Saint Anglican Model Basic School.

Four cubs were subsequently inaugurated to lead their peers in civic education by studying the 1992 Constitution to enhance their understanding of democracy and national development while knowing the roles of democratic institutions in the country.

Mr J.E. Nii Adjiri Sackey, the Korle Klottey Municipal Director of the NCCE, in a welcoming address read on his behalf said quizzes provided the platform not only for enhancing students’ knowledge but also for promoting healthy competition and teamwork among learners.

“The predominant objective of this activity is to deploy quiz as a way to promote learning of the contents of the 1992 Constitution in an interesting manner among students at the basic level as well as enhancing in-depth knowledge and understanding of its provisions,” he stated.

He encouraged Ghanaians not to take the Constitution as an academic tool or material but practicalize it, to help promote the nation’s development.

Mrs Gloria A. Kudo, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, who performed the inauguration, congratulated the schools and the participants who took part in the competition.

She advised the students to continue to study the constitution so they would not be found wanting when it came to their rights and obligations.

“Your obligations will make you future leaders, who will be responsible to move our country forward. So, this is where to start,” she said, adding, “This programme today is not just a ceremony, but a steppingstone to the task ahead.”

Mrs Kudo emphasized, “The programme today does not end here we have to move to create awareness among those in the clubs and those outside of their right and responsibilities.

“As we have the constitution it will help us to foster debate in competitions to ensure that we fit in well; this is the icing on the cake so that these things can be realized.”

Mr Philip Aidoo, the Korle Klottey Municipal Director of Education, in a remark expressed gratitude to the Korle Klottey Municipal NCCE for organizing the programme describing it as educative and insightful.

He praised the students for taking their time to learn and study for the quiz competition, saying, “Just as the Bible is a manual for Christians and the Quran for the Muslims, the Constitution is for the citizens of the nation.”

Mr Aidoo said, “As Ghanaians we have agreed that we will use the constitution to regulate our lives, activities, rights and responsibilities as enshrined in the constitution, therefore it is better for us to start studying it at this tender age.

“For we the elderly people very soon we will leave you and you will be the future leaders, and if you have not prepared well from the scratch when you grow up you will find it difficult fitting into the society, so let take the studies of the constitution very seriously.”

He encouraged the students, saying, “So during your club meetings evangelized just as Christians evangelized with the Bible so that your friends who are not part of the clubs would come along, so that we all learn the constitution, and together we all live peacefully in the country that our forefathers bequeathed to us.”
