Mps Celebrate Black Queens Bronze Medal and Call for Investment

Africa-Press – Ghana. Members of Parliament (MPs) have celebrated the Black Queens for their bronze medallist feat at the just-ended Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) in Morocco, and called for increased investment in female football in the country.

The legislators urged the government to appreciate the efforts of the players and the technical team with deserving bonuses, and not only celebratory statements.

The MPs made the call when the players and the technical team of the Black Queens visited the Parliament House in Accra, on Tuesday, July 29.

Earlier, Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, in a statement on the floor of Parliament, recounted the enduring moments the Black Queens went through in the competition, particularly, after losing their first match to Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

Despite a false start to the tournament, the Minister said, the Black Queens regained momentum and fought resiliently in their subsequent matches to win a bronze medal at the end of the competition.

“Mr Speaker, this milestone was not achieved on the back of comfort or ease. The Black Queens endured a challenging path throughout the competition including two back-to-back 120 minutes of matches and three penalty shootouts,” he said.

The Minister said the players approached every match with discipline, character and technical maturity.

Mr Adams, also the Member of Parliament for Buem, said the government would provide the necessary logistical and welfare support to the Black Queens players and the technical team, and urged corporate bodies to support female football in the country.
