No Sports Levy Proposed or Approved by Cabinet

Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, has stated that the cabinet did not receive or approve a proposal for a sports levy.

He made this clarification in response to reports in the media which suggested that a “Sports Levy” had been approved by cabinet and would serve as the primary source of funds for the Sports Development Fund.

In a social media post, the Minister stated that the cabinet approved the establishment of the Sports Development Fund and shared a photo of its source of funding.

“In the last few days, myjoyonline.com, has carried a story to the effect that Cabinet had approved a “Sports Levy” as a Primary Funding Source for the proposed Sports Development Fund.

“They quote one Evans Yeboah, Treasurer of the Ghana Olympic Committee, as the source of this report.

“For the avoidance of doubt, NO such Levy has been proposed and neither has same been approved by Cabinet.

“A proposed Bill was sent to Cabinet and approved for the establishment of a Sports Development Fund,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu wrote on his social media handles.

Some sources of funding listed under the Minister’s post include the percentage of gate proceeds from sports activities, sports sponsorships, allocations from Parliament, and proceeds from the transfer of Ghanaian athletes, among others.

The Sports Development Fund, if passed by Parliament, would serve as a dedicated financial mechanism to support sports development across disciplines, from infrastructure and player welfare to grassroots initiatives.

The fund would also be a strong funding vehicle that would provide sustainable and transparent financing of Ghanaian sports, especially the least-financed sports.
