Africa-Press – Ghana. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership has urged members to remain united as preparations intensify for the flagbearer election on January 31, 2026.
The call follows increased internal activities and consultations by aspirants seeking to lead the party into the next general election.
Speaking at the signing of the Presidential Peace Accord, Mr Justin Frimpong-Kodua, General Secretary, commended the five aspirants and their representatives for agreeing to sign the agreement.
He cautioned supporters and contestants against actions and utterances that could create divisions, stressing that cohesion remained critical to the party’s electoral fortunes.
Mr Frimpong-Kodua emphasised that the flagbearership contest must be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect, fairness, and adherence to the party’s constitution and democratic principles.
He said internal contests were a normal feature of democratic practice but should not weaken the party’s collective resolve or distract from its broader goal of retaining political power.
Mr Frimpong-Kodua assured members that measures had been put in place to ensure a transparent and credible process, and urged all aspirants to accept the outcome of the elections in good faith.
Madam Frema Osei Opare, Former Chief of Staff, said the party’s electoral losses, both parliamentary and presidential, could be largely linked to internal conflicts, and urged unity and reconciliation ahead of the next general elections.
“…We need to forgive ourselves, reconcile and move on after our internal elections. The National Council of Patrons admonishes that under no circumstance should the choice of the delegate in any of our internal elections degenerate into a reconcilable disagreement…,” she said.
Madam Osei Opare noted that the peace pact was not only for aspirants and delegates, but also for all NPP members and sympathisers.
“Therefore, the need for all aspirants to educate and encourage their supporters to see this important election as a time-tested tradition of our party, and we are all required to come together to prosecute the 2028 election,” she said.
Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader, said the stakes were higher than any ambition of a presidential hopeful and urged aspirants to caution their supporters.
