Africa-Press – Ghana. The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament, has presented cash donation of GHc100,000 to the Black Queens for their bronze medallist feat at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) in Morocco.

Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, exhibited the physical cash on the floor of Parliament, which drew cheers from the legislators and Black Queens players who were seated at the public gallery.

Mr Afenyo-Markin lauded the players, the technical team and the Ghana Football Association for their resilience and sense of purpose throughout the competition.

Madam Patricia Appiagyei, the Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, on behalf of the Caucus, presented the cash to the captain of the team.

Earlier, members of Parliament (MPs) celebrated the Black Queens for their bronze medallist feat at the just-ended Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and called for increased investment in female football in the country.

The legislators urged the government to appreciate the efforts of the players and the technical team with deserving bonuses, and not only celebratory statements.

The MPs made the call when the players and the technical team of the Black Queens visited the Parliament House in Accra, on Tuesday, July 29.

Meanwhile, Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, in a statement on the floor of Parliament, recounted the enduring moments the Black Queens went through particularly, after losing their first match to Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

Despite a false start to the tournament, the Minister said, the Black Queens regained momentum and fought resiliently in their subsequent matches to secure a bronze medal at the end of the competition.

“Mr Speaker, this milestone was not achieved on the back of comfort or ease. The Black Queens endured a challenging path throughout the competition including two back-to-back 120 minutes of matches and three penalty shootouts,” he said.

The Minister said the players approached every match with discipline, character and technical maturity.

Mr Adams, also the Member of Parliament for Buem, said the government would provide the necessary logistical and welfare support to the Black Queens players and the technical team, and urged corporate bodies to support female football in the country.
