The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and the Leadership have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic passing of senior state officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash.
“We note with deep sorrow the confirmation of the news of the tragic passing of senior state officials, including ministers and a member of Parliament,” a statement signed by Mr. David Sabastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations, Parliament, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Accra, on Wednesday said.
“Parliament is deeply saddened by this news and would want to, at this time, express its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and indeed the entire Republic,” it added.
Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Tamale Central.
The deceased also included Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; and Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot.
The rest were Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, co-pilot, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, crew member.
The Parliamentary Caucus has described the loss as a “devastating blow” to the nation, paying tribute to the victims’ dedication to public service.
“May the souls of our departed colleagues who have died in the service of our Republic rest in peace,” it said.
A national day of mourning has been declared, with flags flying at half-mast across the country.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
