Africa-Press – Ghana. Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, the Chairperson of the Women’s Caucus in Parliament, on Wednesday warned men who plan to contest female candidates in the Election 2028, to quit or risk being publicly “named and shamed.”
This comes as Ghana ranks 149th out of 188 nations globally in women’s political representation, raising concern over the country’s slow progress.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, Madam Doyoe Cudjoe emphasised the need for deliberate steps to promote women’s empowerment and increase female participation in governance.
She stressed that men who would contest any female Parliamentarian in the next election, would name and shamed because the few women who were doing their best must be protected.
Madam Doyoe, also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada and the First Deputy Majority Whip, cited a recent United Nations (UN) report, highlighting Ghana’s alleged dismal performance in advancing women’s representation.
Saluting the Speaker, she said “the global report that we brought from the UN is disheartening. If you look at where the blue line is, those are countries that have done better, and where the golden line is, those are countries that have not done anything at all about women.”
The Women’s Caucus planned to engage the Speaker of Parliament to explore ways to support female legislators and improve their chances of retaining their seats.
She said they would visit the Speaker and properly show him the document and tell him how best he could support the sitting female MPs to retain their seats in the next elections.
