Seoul back on alert after North Korean missile launches

Africa-Press – Ghana. Defence analysts were keeping a close eye on North Korea on Sunday, after its forces seemingly fired missiles into the Yellow Sea from what appeared to be multiple-rocket launchers, in an incident that could jangle nerves in an already tense area.

“There were shots believed to be that of North Korea’s multiple rocket launchers this morning,” said a South Korean military official, in comments reported by the Yonhap news agency.

It was unclear how far the projectiles flew. South Korean forces went to a heightened state of readiness and were observing the situation, according to military officials. A vice-ministerial meeting of the South Korean National Security Council was summoned.

North Korea has already fired multiple nuclear-capable missiles this year, in violation of UN resolutions. It was not clear what kind of missiles were launched on Sunday.

Yonhap, cited the South Korean military, saying that North Korean forces fired four missiles within an hour early on Sunday. A presidential spokesperson said they were “short-range projectiles.”

“We are maintaining our defence readiness posture while closely following related developments,” the official told Yonhap.

South Korea and the US are worried that Pyongyang is working on a new model intercontinental missile. North Korea said it was conducting important tests on the development of a surveillance satellite. Notepad
