Africa-Press – Ghana. Some sports enthusiasts in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region are expressing frustration over the high cost of DStv subscription fees and backed the calls for a reduction.

Mr. Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital and Innovation, has led negotiations from the managers of DStv, MultiChoice demanding reduction in subscription as Ghana leads the pact of high paying countries.

The advocacy for lower subscription fees has resonated in Keta municipality with many sports fans and enthusiasts feeling that the current prices were prohibitively expensive.

Mr. Agbesi Lord, the Chief Executive Officer of Lord’s Games Centre, at Tetevikope, a suburb of Keta, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that the high cost of DStv subscription has been a long-standing issue for many sports fans, making it difficult for subscribers to afford.

“It is good and necessary to watch DStv with favorite sports channels but the frustration is palpable, with many fans feeling that they are being priced out of the market,” he said.

He said that the call from the Minister for a reduction in DStv subscription fees has been welcomed by many sports fans and the advocacy was seen as a step in the right direction to give hope to many fans who were expecting review of the pricing structure.

He said the high cost of DStv subscription has forced many fans to seek alternative ways to watch their favorite sports and games at other sources such as streaming online or watching at public viewing centers such as pubs, and others.

Mr. Lord said: “Watching at such public pubs are alternatives which are not always reliable, and many youths feel that they are missing out on the live experience of watching sports on DStv.”

He explained that the minister’s call for a reduction in DStv subscription fees has received widespread support from sports fans who believed that a reduction in prices would make it more accessible to a wider audience, and would help to promote sports development in Ghana and beyond with many fans taking to social media to express their views.

Mr. Mark Adzogble, another resident told the GNA that the DStv’s pricing structure has been criticised for being too high and the company offering various packages, but the prices were relatively high compared to other satellite TV providers while the pricing structure has been a major concerned for many sports fans who felt that it was unfair and exploitative.

He said there was a growing need for affordable sports broadcasting in Ghana and many youth believed that DStv’s pricing structure was unfair and that the company should offer more affordable options to help viewers watch various channels without any challenges or difficulties.

The GNA also gathered that DStv subscription prices in Ghana vary depending on the packages such as Premium (GH₵865 per months) with over 150 channels, Compact (GH₵380 per months) with other 120 channels, Family (GH₵190 per month) with over 95 channels, Access ( GH₵99 per months) with over 75 channels, and Padi (GH₵59 per months) with over 40 channels.

Mr. Samuel Nartey George, the Sector Minister has earlier stated that the same content of the premium bouquet that was offered to Ghanaians for the equivalent of US 83 dollars was offered to Nigerians for US 29 dollars and demanded urgent review and price adjustment from the DStv.

The Minister further gave DStv up to Thursday, August 7, 2025, deadline to either cut 30 per cent subscription prices or face suspension of its broadcasting license with other alternative for their replacement.
