Use Competitions for Career Advancement- Dr. Apaak to Students

Africa-Press – Ghana. Dr Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education, has urged students to use competitions as a steppingstone for growth and career readiness.

Speaking at the launch of the seventh edition of the Tertiary Business Challenge in Accra on Thursday, he said the previous six editions of the competition had provided an excellent foundation for nurturing emerging business talents, helping them progress into professional careers.

“The past six editions have offered a grand platform for the growth and development of budding business minds who have now transitioned into the workspace,” he said.

Dr. Apaak noted that such competitions allowed students to showcase their academic abilities and helped to shape the country’s future workforce.

“Academic competitions like this play a vital role in sharpening the skills of students and fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and critical thinking,” he stated.

“It also provides a platform for our future generations to demonstrate their abilities by empowering them to drive progress and development,” he added, encouraging students to propose solutions to issues such as illegal mining, waste management, and post-harvest losses.”

Dr Apaak commended the organisers for consistently providing a space for students to apply academic knowledge to real-world challenges.

He pledged the government’s support to ensure the competition served as a bridge between academia and the corporate world.

Mr Franklin Sowah, Director of Marketing at Graphic Communications Group Ltd. (GCGL), stressed the importance of combining academic knowledge with field experience.

“The professional work we do, combined with applying what we have learned in school to the job market, helps us add value to everything we engage in,” he said.

Mr Sowah expressed confidence in the competition’s ability to build students’ understanding of business principles and models, stating, “This year we will introduce a business case component across the various clusters or sectors of the quiz.”

He urged participants to strive for excellence, noting that several contestants had secured internships at companies like PWC, with some later earning full-time positions.

“This is a platform that, if taken seriously, offers immense value,” he said.

Twenty-six tertiary institutions will compete in the 2025 edition of the Business Challenge, a quiz designed to develop students’ business acumen and entrepreneurial skills.

The initiative, launched in 2019, is a partnership between Graphic Business, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
