Who Leads the Ghana Olympic Committee?

Africa-Press – Ghana. Federations and associations heads will on Saturday, April 26, 2025 elect a new crop of executives to oversee the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) for the next four years.

The elective congress to be held at the Accra International Conference Centre will witness a keenly contested presidential race between legal practitioner Richard Akpokavie and former Ghana Golf President Micheal Aggrey.

With incumbent President Ben Nunoo Mensah not seeking a third term, a new president would be chosen tomorrow together with other various positions.

It is worth mentioning that Mr Akpokavie, the former GOC Secretary-General, would be contesting for presidency for the second time, having lost narrowly to Ben Nunoo Mensah in the previous election.

Despite his status as an underdog in this year’s presidential contest, Mr Aggrey has the potential to shock a formidable candidate like Akpokavie, but the task would be difficult.

Another position that has garnered a lot of interest in the election is the Secretary-General position, which is now held by Mohammed Sahnoon, an adept legal practitioner.

Mr Sahnoon is seeking a second term in office but faces stiff opposition from Mohammed Muniru Kassim of the Ghana Swimming Association.

In past elections, the Secretary-General position has seen new faces come in, and so it would certainly be a tough task for Mr Sahnoon, who is the President of the Ghana Cycling Federation, to keep his position.

Astute sports administrator Mawuko Afadzinu would be retaining his 1st vice role as he goes unopposed, likewise Mr Fredrick Otu Lartey, who is running for the second vice role.

The third vice position would see Mr Ernest Danso, the Chef De Mission of the 13th African Games contest incumbent Mohammed Mahadi.

A total of 65 delegates are expected to cast their votes, with winners set to be declared by a simple majority.

Some positions are contested:

President: Richard Akpokavie vs Mike Aggrey

General Secretary: Mohammed Baadae Sahnoon (Ghana Cycling) vs. Mohammed Muniru Kassim (Ghana Swimming)

3rd Vice President: Ernest Danso vs. Mohammed Mahadi

Treasurer: Evans Yeboah vs Isaac Aboagye Duah

Assistant Treasurer: Bernard Quartey, Edward Patrick Nii Lante Bannerman, Aurora Commodore-Toppar

Olympic Sports (Five Slots): Eight candidates, including GFA’s Prosper Harrison Addo, Ghana Hockey President Ben Asante, and Delphina Quaye of Swimming

Non-Olympic Sports (One slot): Abdul Haye Yartey (Bodybuilding) vs George Owusu Ansah (National Sports for All)

Three Elected Board Members: Eight contestants, including Rafatu Inusah (Rugby), Edwin Amankwah (Armwrestling), and Philip Elikem Ameku (Chess).
