Africa-Press – Ghana. Mrs Mabel Ibidun Quarshie, the Chief Executive Officer of Acquatic Foods Limited, has urged women to prepare and push a bit hard to take advantage of opportunities that come their way instead of waiting to benefit from affirmative actions.

Mrs Quarshie, who is also the president of the African Women in Agribusiness (AWIAB), explained that giving quotas to women for the sake of it makes it feel like they are being favoured instead of giving them what they deserve or are capable of handling.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, she said, “The woman herself must be willing to take up opportunities.”

She stressed that it was important for women to also get the needed qualifications and what they want to work towards it.

“Know what you want to do; why will they prefer you as a woman over others? Prove that you have the capacity to do so. Be versatile and willing to learn and participate in learning,” she said.

She added that “the opportunities are there, but we are not accessing them. We need to be a bit forceful; women should push more.”

The CEO of Acquatic Foods encouraged women to think outside the box, noting that even if there were cultural practices that limited them, they could dialogue about it to bring the needed change.

“It’s not a fight between men and women, but rather reason with them to get what you need. Explain and dialogue to pave the way to prepare yourself to take up opportunities,” she added.

Touching on entrepreneurship, she indicated that a lot of businesses did not survive within the first three years of commencement, it was important for women not only to venture into businesses but to ensure to learn and incorporate good entrepreneurship skills into their ventures.

She said they must understand that there were pitfalls that would emerge, but how to handle them was important to handle their customers and staff issues, among others.
