Africa-Press – Ghana. The Ghana Wheelchair Tennis Team has returned to the international stage for the 2025 Plock Orlen Wheelchair Tennis Open Championship in Warsaw, Poland.
The competition, which was held on May 22-25, 2025, saw Team Ghana participate in their first International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned individual event of the year.
The team included veteran player Maclean Atsu Dzidzienyo, Bernard Yawson, Daniel Laryea (Lorlor), and the only female participant, Stacy Konadu Mensah, alongside Team Manager Kwabena Afriyie Siaw.
The tournament marked a crucial comeback for the athletes, all of whom had lost their ITF world rankings due to a prolonged absence from international competition.
Their participation in Warsaw now presents them with a vital opportunity to regain their ITF rankings and fortify their path towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
In the men’s Singles, Dzidzienyo, Yawso, and Laryea advanced to the Round of 16 but could not progress further.
In the women’s Singles, Mensah won her Round of 16 match, reaching the quarterfinals, where she eventually bowed out in a spirited contest.
In the doubles category, Mensah teamed up with a Japanese player to secure an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory in their quarterfinal match.
However, they were narrowly defeated in the semifinals by Ruby Bishop (Great Britain) and Donna Broek (Netherlands) in a match that ended 7-5, 6-1.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Siaw, Team Manager conveyed his optimism regarding the future of the team.
He said, “This tournament has re-energised our players and highlighted the potential we have. With consistent participation in ITF events, we are confident that Ghana’s wheelchair tennis athletes will regain competitive rankings and enhance their chances of qualifying for Los Angeles 2028.”
The Ghana Wheelchair Tennis federation continues to advocate for increased support and sponsorship to ensure ongoing international exposure and success for its athletes.
