Africa-Press – Ghana. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is outraged by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s announcement of a 9.8 per cent and 15.9 per cent increase in electricity and water tariffs respectively.

Mr Joshua Ansah, the Secretary-General of TUC Ghana, in a statement, said the increases were to take effect from January 1, 2026, the very day the paltry nine per cent increase in the minimum wage and the base Pay by the Government would also take effect.

“This can only be described as the Government’s New Year’s gift to Ghanaians,” he stated.

“In 2025, the government granted a wage increase of 10 per cent and increased electricity tariffs cumulatively by more than 18 per cent.”

He said as workers bemoaned the nine per cent wage increase for 2026 in the light of the prevailing cost of living, the least they expected was for the Government to spring a surprise on them with increases in prices of utilities.

Mr Ansah said the increment had completely eroded the wage adjustment for 2026.

“Clearly, Government is demonstrating its insensitivity to the daily struggles of workers and Ghanaians,” he said.

“What Government has done is worse than robbing “Peter to pay Paul”.”

The Secretary-General said the Government had robbed the poor Ghanaian worker of the nine per cent wage increase it had agreed to implement on January 1, 2026.

He reiterated that workers could not accept these increases unless the Government returned to the negotiating table to top up the wage increase for 2026, adding that anything short of that, the TUC would mobilise workers to resist the implementation of these insensitive increases in utility prices.

“On Monday, 8 December, 2025, the TUC and Organised Labour would hold a press conference on these insensitive price increases.

He said at the Press Conference, labour would outline measures to address the obnoxious tariff increase.
