Kenyans should be worried, ex-MP says on Linturi-Kuria clash

Africa-Press – Kenya. ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire has criticised Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi and his Trade counterpart Moses Kuria over their contradictory statements on GMO maize importation.

The former Kitutu-Masaba legislator said the two have trivialised a very serious issue by issuing casual statements on a matter so grave.

“Kenyans should be very afraid where Kenya is heading as a country. The issue is being handled without the seriousness it deserves,” Bosire told the Star via phone interview.

On Monday, Linturi distanced himself from Kuria’s remarks that the government had approved the importation of 10 million bags of duty-free maize including GMOs to avert starvation in the country.

Linturi said it wasn’t within Kuria’s purview to issue declarations concerning food security in the country.

He said he is the custodian of information on how much food Kenya needs and the deficit.

“I will give a more comprehensive report on the national food status at a later date when I have all the data. Relax, you will have food,” Linturi said.

Bosire said the Cabinet ought to treat issues touching on human life with a high degree of seriousness as the country battles hunger.

“Kuria made a scary statement regarding human life and many Cabinet members have been making careless statements on very important issues in this country,” he said.

Bosire said Kenyans are in for a difficult time ahead unless the government starts treating life threatening issues with the seriousness they deserve.
