Africa-Press – Kenya. Twenty people have died, 10 rescued after a bus capsized in a river in Mwingi.

In the video seen by the Star on Saturday, the bus attempted to steer the vehicle past a flooded bridge with the help of residents.

After a few minutes, the bus was seen struggling to move its wheels since the water tides were too strong consequently sweeping it into the river.

East sub county police commander Joseph Yakan confirmed the incident adding that the members of the Mwingi Catholic Church were headed for a wedding.

“Unfortunately the bus was carried by water from the Enziu River along Nguni-Nuu road,” he said.

He said the bus is currently immersed in the mud adding that rescue efforts are underway.

Former Kitui Senator David Musila who is at the scene has challenged the government to erect the stalled Enziu bridge to curb such incidences.

Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has dispatched a team of Emergency and Rescue Service providers to Mwingi to assist in rescue and recovery following the fatal accident.

Mutua also condoled with the families who lost their loved ones in the accident.

“I also pass my condolence message to my colleague governor, Charity Ngilu following this very tragic incident,”he said.

Mutua urged drivers to observe caution while approaching rivers especially during this rainy season.
