248 aspirants breached Chapter six, says IEBC

Africa-Press – Kenya. The IEBC has disclosed that 248 aspirants who may have breached Chapter six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity had been probed before polls.

In its annual report, commission’s chairperson Wafula Chebukati said 166 aspirants did not resign by February 9 but declared interests in running for various seats.

From the number, there were 69 MCAs, 40 governors, 39 MPs, 17 woman representatives and one presidential aspirant.

Section 43(5) of the Elections Act 2011, states that a public officer who intends to contest an election must resign from public office at least six months before the date of election.

Those that failed the academic requirements were two governor aspirants.

In the summary of cases, there were two impeached governors and one Senate aspirant, also 53 aspirants for various seats who were under prosecution.

Out of the 53, there were 24 MCAs, 12 governors, 12 MCAs, five senatorial and one presidential aspirant.

The report further states that 418,442 personnel were trained in preparation for the election.

The commission said in the run-up to the August 9 General Election it partnered with various agencies to ensure that only those that did not meet educational, moral and ethical requirements were barred.

“In keeping with the prescriptions of the Constitution, the commission is obligated to ensure that only persons that meet the necessary requirements are cleared,” the report read.

“During the period under review the commission collaborated with EACC and Commission for University Education.”

The report has been tabled before the two Houses of Senate and National Assembly.

The letters of transmittal of the document in compliance with the statutory requirements has been addressed to the President and the two Speakers.
