Africa-Press – Kenya. Forty teams from Busia – 32 for men and eight for women – will participate in the Global Appeal football tournament starting on May 21 in Busia town. Teams to take part in the event will be unveiled in due course.
Global Appeal Sports founder and chairman Yusuf Noah said the soccer bonanza will be officially launched in Nairobi on May 19. It will, thereafter, be rolled out to counties with Busia becoming the first devolved unit to kick-start the event two days later.
Noah said winners in the two categories will proceed to the regional competition with winners from four counties of Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga and Bungoma qualifying for national finals in Nairobi for the inter-regional games.
He said the event will provide an opportunity to tap local talent. Among personalities expected to grace the tournament include officials in charge of recruitment at England’s Crystal Palace Football Academy as well as sports officials from the University of Baltimore.
The officials will specifically focus on ladies’ talents. Scouts from Africog and Serbia will also camp in Busia during the duration of the competition, whose host is the Busia Women Representative Catherine Omanyo.
Noah said the objective of the Global Appeal Football Tournament is to help tap talents that abound in the country to enable them play in big time soccer internationally.
He urged fans in Busia County to turn up in large numbers to make the inaugural tournament a success. The chairman who made an inspection tour of Busia Polytechnic and Busia County Stadium which will host the tourney praised the two facilities for their large size.
He urged the county government to promote the stadium to international standards by revamping it. Noah lauded the host and coordinator, Omanyo, for paying for the registration fee of all the 40 teams that have enrolled for the soccer bonanza, revealing that the launch of a Football Academy in Karen Village in Nairobi will be conducted on June 3.
Earlier, Noah held a closed-door meeting with Football Kenya Federation Busia Branch chairman Hillary Musundi and his secretary general Reuben Olita. Musundi welcomed the tournament, noting that the event will go a long way in nurturing talent in the soccer crazy county.
