Africa seeks transformative climate financing at Paris Summit

Africa-Press – Kenya. African Civil Society Organizations have called on French President Emmanuel Macron to champion transformative climate-friendly policy at the ongoing Paris Summit.

Macron is spearheading the two-day conference that started on Thursday.

The conference is aimed at pushing fiscal processes and institutions to support indebted countries as well as mobilize innovative climate finance.

The 63 organizations noted the urgency for commitments by world leaders to boost climate finance and resilience in Africa.

“We have come together as African civil society organizations to call on the world leaders, demanding transformative climate finance commitments for the resilience of African nations at the Paris Summit,” they said.

They called for community-led efforts to effectively respond to the rising impacts of climate change.

The CSOs identified critical areas for attention during the summit as well as financing climate education.

Power Shift Africa Director, Mohamed Adow said African voices have always been ignored yet they always bear the brunt of the climate crisis.

“Africa has been bearing the brunt of the climate crisis since before the world started discussing what to do about it yet we have been frequently ignored and our needs left unmet,” he said.

Adow said there is plenty of money in the global financial system which rich countries have been spending to help Ukraine and respond to COVID-19.

African Climate Reality Project campaigner, Courtney Morgan on the other hand said there is a need for climate finance since it is a necessity.

“We cannot talk about climate justice without recognizing the need for climate finance. We affirm the need for climate finance since it is necessary for mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage,” Morgan said.

The organizations said climate adaptation has been sidelined in global climate discussions for a long time and there is a need for the matter to be looked into.

They said the African continent is currently facing substantial and escalating costs due to adverse climate impacts from a crisis it did not cause.

The CSOs told the summit host, Macron that they demand stronger commitments to climate finance as the surest way to create a more resilient and sustainable future for Africa’s vulnerable populations.

“By prioritizing these concerns, we can create a resilient and sustainable future for Africa and the vulnerable communities it comprises,” they said.
