Africa-PressKenya. Police officers across the country are set to undergo free medical assessments supervised by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).

This comes after the commission received numerous complaints from officers in regard to their experience when seeking medicare.

During the launch of the program in Kisumu County on Wednesday, September 15, the NPSC chairman, Eliud Kinuthia, stated that the exercise was intended to deal with health challenges affecting the performance of officers on duty.

“The ongoing medical assessment for police officers in the country intends to cumulatively tackle health issues that hinder officers from effectively discharging their duties,” Kinuthia stated.

The chairman further stated that the commission was working towards finding long-lasting solutions to issues that have affected the health of officers in the country.

“The National Police Service Commission is looking for a lasting solution to the various health challenges facing police officers,” he stated.

At the event, the police boss intervened to assist four-stranded officers who could not access full medication at a Kisumu hospital.

The officers were stranded after they had reached the capitation limit of their insurance cover offered by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

“I had to intervene to assist four police officers inconvenienced by capitation to access full services as their treatment exceeded the capitation rate placed by NHIF,” Kinuthia stated.

The chair blamed such incidents on the limited health insurance coverage for officers within the service.

“I am in Kisumu to assess processes and various conditions put by NHIF on police officers that are to blame for causing stress and depression during access to medical services,” Kinuthia stated.

While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security on September 10, 2021, Kinuthia revealed they had received complaints from officers regarding their limited medical cover.

“During a recent field visit, officers complained of capitation limiting the daily amount they can spend on medication contrary to unlimited package negotiated for the ranks of Police Constable to Inspector,” the police boss revealed.
