Africa-PressKenya. Barely a day after the death of Kenya’s top athlete Agnes Tirop, another athlete has been reported dead in Kirinyaga county.

Police in Kerugoya, have arrested a youthful man on suspicion of killing his girlfriend, Edith Muthoni, 27, on Tuesday night, October 12.

Kennedy Nyamu was accused of hacking Muthoni in the head at Kianjege East Village in Kerugoya after a domestic dispute.

According to Muthoni’s sister, Jane Nyawira King’uru, the accused attacked her sibling after she picked up his phone to go through its contents.

“She and her boyfriend had been together for three years. On the fateful evening, the two fought over Nyamu’s phone,” Nyawira pointed out.

Muthoni is known for her prowess in local marathon races. She also worked as a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) community scout in Embu County.

She was taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital while in critical condition. However, she passed away while receiving treatment.

Norman Gitari, the lead administrator of Kerugoya Hospital, noted that Muthoni had been brought to the hospital by a good Samaritan.

According to a statement on Wednesday, October 14, by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the suspect led the police to the crime scene.

Jane Nyawira eulogized her sister as someone who was calm, adding that she would speak it out whenever she was disturbed.

She also noted that her sister’s passion for athletics began way back when she was young.

“She has been passionate about long distance races since childhood, Muthoni participated in locally-held marathons, including events in Mombasa, Nairobi and Kisumu,” she noted.

Jane noted that she got news while at work that her sister had been taken to the hospital.

“On Tuesday, while at work, I received a phone call from a relative that Muthoni had been taken to Kerugoya Hospital in critical condition. I rushed there and was told she had been admitted to the emergency ward. Shortly after accessing the ward, I was informed by the nurses that she had died,” Jane painfully narrated.

Muthoni’s father has urged police to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that her killers are brought to book.

“My child was not ailing, she was killed. I’m urging the Government to arrest and bring her killers to justice,” the father pleaded.
