Africa-Press – Kenya. Wazito midfielder Elly Asieche hopes for a glorious new season after a nagging injury he sustained in the preceding season clipped his wings and threw all his aspirations into disarray.
Asieche said all the dreams he nursed last season went down the drain after he was stretchered off from a training session with a muscle tear that kept him out of action for the better part of the campaign.
“I’m looking forward to a far-much better season. Last season, my performance was quite limited after the I sustained a serious injury during one of our training sessions,” said Asieche.
Asieche said he is determined to enhance the six-goal tally he registered in the preceding season.
“My objective is to score more goals than I managed in the previous season and I believe I’ve already recovered well enough to get that done,” said Asieche.
The midfielder said he didn’t think the league would be affected in any way following a quick resumption of fixtures after a brief one-month break.
“I don’t think we are likely to witness a dip in performance due to fatigue as much as the league kicked off barely a month after the other season concluded. The opening league matches will act more like pre-season encounters and, obviously, competition will gain its usual momentum as time goes by,” said Asieche.
Asieche said he was enjoying plying his trade at Wazito under veteran gaffer Francis Kimanzi, who approached him upon his appointment.
The midfielder arrived at the moneybags from rivals Sofapaka on February 3 amid growing concern about his soured relationship with the technical bench.
“I’m happy at Wazito. That doesn’t mean I had issues with Sofapaka. These are two different clubs with different styles of management,” said Asieche.
Asieche is optimistic it won’t be long before he dons the national team colours again after the injury locked him out of team selection twice in a row.
“There will always be a chance to join the national team as long as my performance is good enough. That’s exactly what I’m working towards,” he said.
Wazito, who kicked off the new season with a one-all draw against debutants Talanta at Ruaraka Stadium last Saturday, will face Nairobi City Stars in their next assignment.
