Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has reiterated that the AU is against any form of undemocratic removal of governments saying coups are not a solution to problems facing Africa.
The President spoke on Thursday at the start of his two-day state visit to Mozambique where he held bilateral talks with his host Filipe Nyusi and attended the launch of the Kenya-Mozambique Joint Trade Committee ( JTC).
“Coups are not a panacea, they are not a solution to the challenges that we have as a continent,” Ruto said during the JTC launch.
The Head of State said coups like the one that happened in Niger are as undemocratic as colonial masters and the AU is doing everything in its power to expel Niger from the African Union.
“Ecowas which is part of the building blocs is handling the case in Niger, IGAD is handling the case in Sudan because we believe that we should be able to provide a solution as leaders in this continent,” Ruto said.
The Niger President Mohamed Bazoum was toppled on July 26 by the presidential guards who were assigned to protect him.
The coup leaders have held him under house arrest ever since but photos of the President have emerged once since the coup.
Presidential guard commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta.
Ruto revealed that ECOWAS leaders were meeting on Thursday to deliberate on the next course of action to ensure democratic leadership is reinstated in Niger.
“Our position is that President Bazoum should be reinstated as the democratically elected President of Niger and whatever interventions ECOWAS will agree on will have the support of those of us in the African Union so that we can put a stop to the slide to undemocratic governments in our continent,” Ruto said.
