Africa-Press – Kenya. Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed made a promise to the family of fallen athlete Agnes Tirop, affirming that the Athlete’s welfare taskforce in sports, that had been put in place, would aid in tabling its findings on how to support the family alongside other athletes.
Speaking on Thursday, October 21 in Nandi County, CS Amina noted that the findings were of essence and came at a time when the athletics world mourned Tirop’s demise.
Amina directed that the taskforce should treat the case with the utmost importance and deliver its findings by Wednesday, October 27.
Amina, flanked by Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei, pointed out that the government is set to launch a conference, Agnes Tirop’s Conference, in honour of the fallen athlete.
During her address, she spoke fondly of the fallen athlete, noting that the country had lost an ambassador whose prime years were still ahead of her.
“The slain athlete was an ambassador. She will be remembered for her patriotism and ambassadorial work for all the times that she represented the country, won and got the national anthem played in front of a global audience,” she stated.
The news comes as the post-mortem results, that were recently released, revealed that the fallen athlete succumbed to injuries caused by stab wounds to the neck. Further, the results showed that she was hit on the head with a blunt object.
“Generally, the examination has shown injuries due to blunt post-trauma,” pathologist Dr Dorothy Njeru informed the media.
The body was then transferred from Iten County Referral Hospital to Eldoret Hospital mortuary ahead of burial in Kapnyamisa village, Nandi County slated for Saturday, October 23.
Tirop’s husband, Emmanuel Ibrahim Rotich, accused of committing the offence, was on Monday, October 18, arraigned at the Iten Law Courts.
The judge directed Rotich to be detained at the Eldoret Police Station for 20 days pending investigations.
