CS Amina says Queen's Relay Baton renews Kenya's hopes

Africa-Press – Kenya. Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed on Tuesday launched the Queens Relay baton at the Nairobi Arboretum.

The exercise occurred barely hours after the Baton had arrived from Cameroon earlier in the morning.

CS Amina pointed out the important role the Baton plays in complementing the country’s aspirations, renewed hope and resilience.

“The Baton Relay carries with it an ideal and topical theme of sustainability, youth and inclusion,” said Amina.

“It directs our collective energies on rebuilding countries and reigniting economies across the Commonwealth that have been greatly affected by global Covid-19 pandemic,” she added.

The CS further described the Relay Baton as a symbol of unity and diversity of the Commonwealth nations.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) president Paul Tergat, who led a high key delegation of athletes and federations officials to the event, urged all sports personalities to reflect deeply on the outlined values.

The athletes’ representative, Humphrey Kayange, said it was fantastic to have the Baton in Kenya. “It’s arrival signifies an exciting moment in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and I’m really looking forward to the various visits and activities during its time here,” said Kayange.

Kenya is the eighth destination amongst the 72 Commonwealth Nations that will receive the Baton before it eventually gets to Birmingham.

The Baton will be taken to Ngong Hills, Kajiado County on Wednesday.

Besides serving to popularise the Commonwealth Games scheduled for Birmingham on July 28 to August 8, it will also be used to spread the message of sustainability, youth and inclusion.
