Africa-Press – Kenya. Beleaguered Kanu secretary general Nick Salat has informally quit the party a few days after the National Executive Council approved a report from a disciplinary committee to expel him.
On Monday, Salat exited all the social media platforms associated with the Independence party.
“There is no need for me to continue staying in these WhatAssp groups,” he told the Star when contacted after his exit elicited mixed reactions from his supporters and party members.
He added, “I will leave all the groups associated with the party.”
On February 10, NEC tasked the party chairman Gideon Moi to propose for deliberations and adoption suitable candidates for the vacant positions including that of the SG.
At the height of their political differences with Moi, Salat attended an event in Bomet presided over by President William Ruto where he pledged to support him.
He told the President that he will start campaigning to ensure he gets his two five-year terms in power.
“I am now in the government and I have suffered outside for a long time,” Salat said on January 15.
He added, “I know you will be President for ten years. I saw the great reception that you were accorded in Nyanza and I cannot be left behind. Wherever you are, I will be. I have suffered too long, please accept me back.”
During the meeting, Prime cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi described Salat as a good person and urged him to stick with Ruto.
“You have lost 15 good years but it is never too late to start again. Let’s walk this journey together and never look back,” the ANC party leader said.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed Salat was misused by Kanu chairman Gideon Moi despite being loyal to him for ages.
Salat was suspended from the party on December 15.
