Africa-Press – Kenya. The family of missing human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi has made fresh demands to the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments for answers about his disappearance.
Led by Mwabili’s sister, Isabella Kituri, the family has urged the two governments to find Mwabili, who was reportedly abducted by unknown individuals while working in Tanzania.
While detailing how she had learned of her brother’s disappearance, Kituri revealed that they had been informed that Mwabili had vanished without trace and that attempts to find him had been unsuccessful.
She added that her fears had deepened because her brother was a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s church fundraising missions and had mobilised Gen Z movements through his social media platforms.
“Mwabili served a just cause to defend the integrity of the church. He was just doing his civic duty as a normal Kenyan,” a visibly emotional Kituri stated.
“If there is anything else that he did, he should just be produced through the legal justice system,” she added.
Vocal Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid confirmed news of Mwabili’s alleged abduction, revealing that unknown individuals took the activist on Wednesday, July 23.
Khalid revealed that he learnt of Mwabili’s abduction through a family member who contacted him directly about the activist’s whereabouts.
The Vocal Africa boss criticised President Samia Suluhu’s administration for reportedly targeting Kenyan activists without justification.
“A Kenyan has been abducted in Tanzania. Again. Family has confirmed that Mwabili Mwagodi, who is a Kenyan activist and was vocal against church donations, was abducted in Tanzania on Wednesday,” said Khalid.
Commenting on the matter, Mwabili’s wife disclosed that her husband went missing on Wednesday at around 10 p.m., on his way to Dar es Salaam.
According to her, Mwabili left his car behind and opted to use public transport to Dar es Salaam, where he works for a hospitality company.
It was during his journey to the city that his phone went off. Attempts by his wife to reach him by phone were unsuccessful, raising concerns over a possible abduction.
Mwabili’s alleged abduction comes barely weeks after other Kenyan activists, including Boniface Mwangi, were detained in Tanzania for several days.
