Ruto Announces Changes in Key Public Health Institutions

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has made significant changes to key health institutions as part of the broader strategy to strengthen service delivery within the health sector.

The Head of State, in a gazette notice dated Friday, July 25, appointed Samier Muravvej to be the non-executive chairperson of the Board of the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council.

Following his appointment, Samier is set to take over the new role with immediate effect and will serve at the helm of the council for the next three years.

At the same time, the President appointed Paul Ndungu to be a non-executive chairperson of the Kenya National Public Health Institute for three years beginning Friday, July 25, 2025.

Kariuki replaces David Ndegwa Nyokabi, whose appointment as the chairperson of the health institute was revoked. Nyokabi was appointed to the position by Ruto in August 2023.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Paul Ndung’u Kariuki to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya National Public Health Institute,” Ruto announced.

Additionally, Ruto also appointed Frederick Namenya Were as the Chairperson of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council for three years.

During the announcement, the President revoked the appointment of Stanley Khainga, who was appointed to the helm of the position in March 2023.

The above changes also come against the backdrop of Abbas Gullet’s appointment as the non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Board.

The former Red Cross boss was appointed by President Ruto on Friday, July 22 and is set to serve in the new position for the next three years.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Abbas Gullet to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Kenyatta National Hospital, for three years, with effect from the 25th July, 2025. The appointment of Samier Muravvej (Dr.) is revoked,” reads part of the gazette notice.

Gullet is widely known for his role as the Kenya Red Cross Chief Executive Officer, a role he held for nearly two decades before his latest appointment to government.
