Africa-Press – Kenya. Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji is calling on the media to refrain from sensational reporting and instead strive for facts. Haji said the rule of law has been undermined and the public has lost confidence in institutions as a result of misreporting.
Without giving names, Haji said two media houses were recently cited for contempt of court after they allegedly misinformed the public about a key witness, jeopardising the case.
“With great power comes great responsibility, as such you are expected to be professional in the discharge of your duties,” Haji said in a statement read on his behalf by Jacinta Nyamosi.
“I urge you to focus on reporting the truth and facts to safeguard the rule of law,” Nyamosi spoke during the 10th anniversary to celebrate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against journalists.
Haji also sought to assure journalists of his commitment to ensuring the media space is protected. In ensuring this succeeds, the Director stated that his office has developed guidelines that will ensure all perpetrators of crimes against Kenyans and journalists, are held responsible.
“It will also play a role in preventing any frivolous cases that may be brought against you, as strict adherence to the law will be observed,” he said.
