Africa-Press – Kenya. Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla on Saturday admitted to a protocol hitch during KDF Day celebrations at the Embakasi Garrison where he failed to recognise First Lady Rachel Ruto.
The General, however, corrected the mistake in time and apologised to President William Ruto for breaking protocol.
“Before I invite your Excellency, I want to make an apology. When I was going through the salutations, I discovered I did not recognise Her Excellency the First Lady. I apologise, your Excellency,” Ogolla said, turned to podium and saluted.
The President and the First Lady were the chief guests during the event held in commemoration of gallant soldiers on the frontline.
At the beginning of his salutation, General Ogolla recognised the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, Secretary for Defence, Speaker of the Senate, Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Vice Chief of Defence Forces, Service Commanders, serving and retired General officers and retired Chief of Defence Forces among others.
The President was accompanied by the First Lady among others during the 12th KDF Day.
They laid wreathes in commemoration of fallen soldiers who died in the line of duty.
Wives of the soldiers present during the event were also given an opportunity to lay wreathes.
KDF Day is observed annually to commemorate and celebrate the acts of valour and gallantry by KDF heroes and heroines.
The day has been observed since October 2012 following the launch of Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011.
This year’s theme was ‘One Force One Mission-Enhancing National and Regional Security’.
According to officials, KDF Day is the most important day in the KDF calendar as it is reflected in their idea of duty.
